Funeral services for Jimmy Don Lowry of Conroe will be held at 2:00 pm., Monday November 27, 2006 at Cashner Colonial Chapel with Rev. Kevin Jones officiating, Interment will be in Duncan Oklahoma at Duncan City Cemetery on Wednesday. Visitation will be Sunday November 26, 2006 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at Cashner Funeral Home.
Jimmy Don Lowry was born to Jim and Zetta Armstrong Lowry on March 21, 1941, in Duncan Oklahoma, passed away in Houston, Texas on November 23, 2006, at the VA Hospital. Jimmy Don graduated from Duncan High School in 1959 and continued his education at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma earning a Bachelors degree in Business Marketing in 1964. While attending the university, he learned to fly fixed wing aircraft in preparation for his military service as a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam. He flew a slick-ship and earned a Purple Heart, two awards for Valor and a Bronze Star.
In 1967, after his tour of duty overseas, he returned to his wife Lynda and son Greg in Ft. Wolters, TX in 1967 to train helicopter pilots and was blessed with birth of his daughter Kendra. Jimmy was honorably discharged in 1968. Shortly thereafter, he went to Tulsa’s Spartan Aviation learning multi-engine aircraft flying as an instructor to new pilots. He joined Petroleum Helicopters, Inc. in 1971 flying out of Lafayette, La., Sabine Pass and Galveston, TX where he retired in September 2006. He loved bow and rifle hunting, golf and skiing. To round out his pursuits he was a champion Western-style dancer. In July, 2001 he married his present wife Virginia and they moved to Conroe in 2002. They helped with the beginning of Church on the Rock in Conroe, giving generously of their time and energy. In May 2006, Jimmy was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS: Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was spending time with his daughter in Houston at the time of his death.
Jimmy is survived by his wife Virginia, of the home; son Gregory of Cedar City, UT; daughter Kendra of New York City and Houston; sister Glenda of Huntington, WV; and numerous cousins and friends.
