Mr. Walker was born on August 22, 1924 in Huntsville, Texas to Ethel Marie Walker and died on December 25, 2006 in Conroe, Texas.
Mr. Walker was inducted into the U. S. Army on March 10, 1943. He was a staff sergeant in the U. S. Army Air Forces and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II as an airplane gunner. He was honorably discharged on February 28, 1946. He received both the Good Conduct and Victory Medals. After the war, he continued his education at Sam Houston State Teacher’s College where he became Sam Houston’s first 4 year letterman in golf. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration in May of 1949. He married Dorothy Gillaspie on February 9, 1951. He moved to Conroe with his family in 1955 where he owned several small businesses before opening The Shoe Box in 1963.
O.H. was an avid golfer and a member of the Conroe Country Club for over 50 years.
O.H. was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Walker. He is survived by his daughter, Celeste Howell and husband Doug of Conroe; sisters, Marie Ballard of Huntsville and Gillian Harang of Brazoria; grandchild, Eric Howell and wife Jan of Conroe; great grandchild, Judd Carter of Conroe; sister-in-law, Opal McCullar of Austin and by several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers: Doug Howell, Eric Howell, Judd Carter, Foster Madeley, James Spikes, and Jimmy Patrus. Honorary pallbearers: Frank Campagne, Keitt Gilliland, Jack McMahan, and R.M. Traylor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the build fund at First Baptist Church, 600 North Main, Conroe, TX 77301 or the Heritage Museum, P.O. Box 2262, Conroe, TX 77305.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel in the Park Mausoleum. Interment will follow in Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, December 27, 2006 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Cashner Funeral Home.
