Thomas Michael “Mike” Buzbee, 68, of New Waverly Texas, passed away Friday, March 16, 2007, after a brief illness with his immediate family by his side. Mike was born October 1, 1938 in Greggton, Texas to Rex and Mildred Buzbee.
Mike Buzbee’s life work was helping Texas’ disadvantaged adjudicated youth. As the President/CEO of the Gulf Coast Trade Center (The Center) for the last 35 years, Mike started and directed The Center with a vision and tenacity that is unmatched in the Juvenile Corrections Industry, with The Center becoming a nationally recognized educational trades program; serving over 30,000 troubled/adjudicated youth through three decades. Additionally, Mike served as superintendent of the Raven Charter School, which was established on the site in 1998. Prior to his present position, Mike served as a staff representative for the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, PCD, AFL-CIO and the Office Employees International Union, Local 27.
Mike’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science from the University of Houston in 1961 and a Master of Arts, Criminology, Sam Houston State University in 1975. Mike is affiliated with numerous organizations and has been a Board Member on the Texas Education Agencies Region 6 Board, the Walker County Chamber of Commerce, Texas Youth-Build Coalition (Chair), New Leader’s Academy, National Youth Employment Coalition. In addition, Mike has been recognized by the Attorney General, Juvenile Justice Award (1994); the Texas Legislature, “Work on Behalf of the Children and Families of Texas” 74th Texas House of Representatives; Bridge Builders first Annual Award, Chamber of Commerce, Walker County Texas (1997); the recipient of the New American Community Award, and the National Council of Crime and Delinquency1994 Demonstration.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rex Millington Buzbee; sisters: Ann Buzbee Ponischil, Carol Jane Buzbee Jones and Nancy Paschal. Mike is survived by his wife Kathryn Benesh Buzbee, his loving wife of 45 years. Children: Thomas M. Buzbee, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Tyler, Texas; Stephanie Marie Shelly and husband Kenneth of Willis, Texas; Scott Anthony Buzbee and wife Kalea of Conroe, Texas; Mary Megan Buzbee-D’Souza and husband Daniel of Houston, Texas. Brother: Patrick Hugh Buzbee and wife Marilyn. Grandchildren: William Anthony (Tony), Kristen Marie Shelly, Kyle Thomas Buzbee, Allison Marie Buzbee, Meridith Lynn Buzbee, Nolan Michael Keith D’Souza, Colin Thomas Anthony D’Souza, and Samuel Scott Buzbee.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday March 19, 2007, from 4 to 7 pm at Cashner Funeral Home at 801 Teas Road, Conroe Texas, 77305. A Buffet will be served from 6 to 8 pm at the Gulf Coast Trades Center Family Life Center located at 143 Forest Service Rd. # 233 New Waverly, Texas. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 20. 2007 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church located at 109 N. Frazier in Conroe, Texas, with services being conducted by Father Don Schwarting. Pallbearers are Nick Briggs, Bill Harrison, Joey Hickey, Archie Roberson, Chris Snipes, Johnny Pate, Oscar Gonzales, Ron Rea, Nate Lewis, and David Sanchez. Interment is at Garden Park Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Auditorium.
