Funeral services for Oscar Curtis Quarles will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. In Cashner Colonial Chapel with Pastor Ray Hyden officiating. Interment will follow at Pool Cemetery at Union Grove Baptist Church in Montgomery, Texas. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, 2003 from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Cashner Funeral Home.
Mr. Quarles was born on November 24, 1913 in Groveton, Texas to Oscar Philip and Henrietta Redden Quarles, and passed away in the Willis Convalescent Nursing Home on Sunday, January 12, 2003 at the age of 89. As a youth, he lived in the Fairbanks, Texas area working on a dairy farm and sharing his early years with his cousin Tommy Jefferson. During World War II he worked at the naval base as a civilian mechanic in Galveston and at the shipyards in Houston doing his part to support our country by helping to build ships. Mr. Quarles retired in 1973 after working many years in various garages in Conroe as an auto mechanic. He lived in Conroe over 70 years and was a member of Grace Baptist Church at Beach, Texas for many years.
His father, Oscar Philip Quarles; infant sister, Martha Quarles; mother, Henrietta Poston and stepfather, Charlie Poston; and his wife of 63 years, Lula Bell Turner Lang Quarles, preceded him in death. He is survived by his stepson, William O. "Bobby" Lang and wife Hazel of Conroe; stepdaughter, Betty Lang Walker and husband Ed of Altair, Texas; cousins, Tommy Jefferson and wife Peggy of Lufkin, Aileen Redden Ratcliffe, and Rudy Redden and wife Marie of Conroe. Five step-grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren; and one step-great-great granddaughter also survive.
Pallbearers are Ed Walker, Roy Brown, Wayne Brown, Mike Lang, Jason Lang, and Andy Brown.
