Franklin S. "Pete" Markle, Jr., 66, a native Houstonian, passed away Friday, March 12, 2004. Pete grew up on Country Club Dr. and liked to refer to himself as an Old East End Boy. He was a 1956 graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School, where he excelled in baseball and basketball, as his chosen sports. He attended the U. of H. on a basketball scholarship and played baseball, as well, for his school; where he proved to be a superb athlete. Pete graduated from the U. of H. in 1960 with a BBA in advertising & marketing. He worked in the Houston area until 1972, when he moved to Dallas. He returned to this area in 1990 and settled as a resident of Panorama Village.
Pete was the most successful man I've ever known; working for 43 years, doing what he loved the best, selling office equipment. We called him the "Happy go Lucky Salesman." He treated his customers with respect and honesty, providing professionalism as his first product. The customers that turned into personal friends are far too many to mention. In more recent years, he played basketball in the Senior Olympics, with his teams taking 1st or 2nd place in the state competitions and placing in the "Sweet 16" several years in the national. When he wasn't on the court, he was on the course for weekly rounds of golf and fun with friends. Charity functions were his favorite and a cabinet of trophies are the results of his talents. He was one of the directors with the H - Association at the U of H, and a life member of the Letterman's Association.
As his wife, I have loved this wonderful man since he stole my heart on our first date, in April, 1999. We married in September of that same year; and although our life together was far too brief, every moment was one to treasure. There was dancing by candlelight in the early morning hours and a life of complete happiness in all we shared. If I had to pick what I loved best about my Pete, it would have to be "everything" and I miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father, Franklin S. "Pete" Markle, Sr. His survivors are his loving wife, Betty; mother, Fern; Brother, Richard "Dickie" & wife Gloria; Son, Franklin S. Markle, III & wife Melissa & Grandson Nathanael; Daughter, Alexa Gunaca & Grandsons, Spenser & Clayton; Stepdaughters, Mychelle Defoor & Heather Defoor and hundreds of close friends. Pete wanted his passing to be a celebration of the life he shared with each of us; and to be remembered as the fun & wonderful person we knew him to be.
