Funeral services for John Paul Powell will be held Thursday May 6, 2004 in Cashner Colonial Chapel locate at 801 Teas Rd. Conroe, Texas 77303 with Dr. Moody associate pastor of West Conroe Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday May 5, 2004 from 4 to 9 pm at Cashner Funeral Home.
John Paul Powell, age 78, was born October 11, 1925 in Groveton, Texas to Luther and Sally Lawrence Powell. He died May 3, 2004 at home in Conroe, Texas. John was born the 8th of 11 children and was a 4th generation Texan. The Powell family is listed in Texas's First Families through the Texas Genealogy Society. He attended Groveton schools and entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was a Gunner's Mate 3rd class and he served on the destroyer escort ship, USS Davis. His tour of duty took him to North Africa, Italy and The South of France. The Officers and Crew of the USS Davis received the following awards and citations: European Campaign Theater award for the Battle of Anzio and Southern France with two stars, award of serving in North Africa and the Middle East, the Legion of Merit given as a Navy Unit Citation for a meritorious service to the Navy and an award for his ship carrying equipment for jamming glider bombers. A good conduct ribbon was also issued to him. Because he left school to serve during World War II he did not graduate high school. One of his proudest moments came this year after waiting 60 years; he received his diploma with the original graduation date of May 26, 1945. He attended Lamar prior to it becoming a University. He also received a Certificate of Pastoral Training from the Seminary Extension Department of The Seminaries of the Southern Baptist Convention. He also received a Certificate of License and was certified to the Ministry by Southeast Baptist Church in Houston in 1966 by Pastor Tom Clawson. Upon returning from the war he began working. He worked for Mosher Steel, Reed Roller Bit and began work for Camco, Inc. in 1952. He retired from Camco after 33 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nora Ailene May Powell. He is also survived by his three children. Joyce Ferguson and son-in-law Stanley, Patricia Hamaker and son-in-law Richard and his son, Paul Powell. He is Papaw to grandchildren Leon and wife Laurie, Kristy and Rick, Paige and husband Daryle, Shawn and wife Teresa, Jana and husband Brian, Stanly Paul, J.R., Calie and Jessie. He is Papaw to great-grandchildren, Jordan and Erin, Matthew, Devon, Lynsey, Amber, Dakota, Tucker, Mason, Shauna, Morgan and Faith. He was predeceased by great granddaughter, Lainie Taylor Rose. He is survived by 1 brother, Vic Powell and his wife Nina. He is survived by two sisters, Bernice Mason and Olivia Toddy. He is also survived by sister-in-law Phoebe Powell. He is predeceased by both parents and brothers, Guy, Luther, Jim and David. He is predeceased by sisters, Onita, Mary and Moselle. He is survived by Sister-in-laws Louise Smith, Dorothy Bushart Carr and husband Raymond Carr and Brother-in-law J.R. May and wife Bertha. He is Uncle Dude to many nephews and nieces and survived by many cousins.
Pall Bearers will be grandsons and honor pall bearers will be members of the Men's Barnabas Sunday School Class of which he was a member at West Conroe Baptist Church.
