Barbara Ellen Basham, 87, passed away at her home in Conroe, Texas on August 21, 2004 following a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer. Barbara was born on December 3, 1916 in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. She was married to Ivy W. Basham for 56 years until his death in 1992.
Barbara and I. W. were the parents of three children, a son, William Duane, and two daughters, Barbara Jean and Beverly Ann. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, I. W. as well as her daughter, Barbara Jean at the age of two years. She is survived by her son, William Duane Basham, and his wife, Doris Jean Basham, of Marble Falls, Texas; daughter, Beverly Ann Winfree and husband, Jerry Winfree, of Conroe, Texas; five grandchildren, Sharla Gayle Friedrichs and husband Matt Friedrichs of Goliad, Texas, Ann Ellen Bachus and husband Bryan Bachus of Conroe, Texas, Jill Elizabeth Winfree of Austin, Texas, Matthew Allen Basham and Mark David Basham of Huntsville, Texas; and great grandchildren, Bryan Dustin Bachus, Blake Donovan Bachus, and Jilliann Star Bachus of Conroe, Texas.
Barbara graduated from Sam Houston State University and was a retired librarian with the Conroe Independent School District. Her life exemplified her commitment to her family and her spiritual beliefs. She and her husband were founding members of West Conroe Baptist Church, and in spite of her advanced age, Barbara continued her strong dedication to missions by helping start RiverPointe Baptist Church of Conroe. Barbaras unfailing spiritual faith inspired those around her, and was evident through her service in positions of leadership in church-related activities. These include terms as Baptist Womens Missionary Union President for Blanco Association, teacher of Sunday School for fifty-plus years, and membership on a statewide board for the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
A memorial service will be held at West Conroe Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at 3:00 PM with the Reverend Charles Dooley officiating, assisted by Reverend Dane Riddle, pastor of RiverPointe Baptist Church.
