Funeral services for Horace Brannon Whitehurst, 85, of Conroe will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. in Cashner Colonial Chapel with Dr. Jay Gross and Rev. Ed Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in Garden Park Cemetery.
Mr. Whitehurst was born on December 26, 1918 in Montrose, Jones County, Mississippi and passed away Saturday, August 21, 2004 at home in Conroe, Texas surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness. He grew up in Youngstown, Florida and graduated from Bay County High, Panama City, Florida in 1937. After he graduated from high school, he followed his three brothers to Louisiana to work in the oilfields. There he met and married Ruthie Mae Boyd of Converse, Louisiana on June 10, 1938. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific. After discharge from the service, Horace and Ruthie made their home in Converse, LA where he was ordained as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church. They moved to Conroe in 1978 where he worked for Louisiana Pacific until his retirement in 1992. He was a charter member of West Conroe Baptist Church where he was a Deacon.
His parents, Joseph Walter and Nancy Catherine Whitehurst, four sisters, and three brothers all preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruthie Whitehurst of Conroe; daughters, Martha Bartle and husband Bill of Houston, and Nancy Boswell and husband James of Montgomery; grandchildren, Emily Boswell of College Station, Brannon Boswell of Huntsville, and Andy Boswell of College Station; and sister-in-law Jean Whitehurst, along with many nieces, nephews, and other extended family, including: Michael and Debra Hoyt and children, and T. and Lural Bartle.
