Mr. Billings was born on October 6, 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Arthur Lewis and Edra Mae Billings and passed away on July 21, 2005 in Conroe, Texas. Roger attended the University of Oklahoma where he earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Geology. After spending time in various places in the Rocky Mountains with Carter Oil, he and the family moved to South America. Several years later, he returned to the states and earned an MBA degree from Harvard. For the next 30 years, he worked with various oil companies both in the U.S. and overseas. He enjoyed setting up new companies and watching them grow. Eventually, he returned to Houston where he had lived several times before and became CEO of a private oil company. He retired in 1997 and moved to Conroe where he had had a summer place for 20 years.
After retiring and building a new home, he started to volunteer at Sam Houston Elementary School where he helped children read in Spanish before they transitioned into English. He dearly loved the children and they reciprocated with their love for him. Roger received several awards for his volunteer work with the children. He also enjoyed gardening and became a Master Gardener. He volunteered at the Texas Agricultural Extension Center several times a month, answering callers questions on gardening problems.
Roger is survived by his wife Carol; daughters, Victoria, Meg and husband Yama; granddaughters, Alexandra, Mackenzie, Ema, and Anna; sisters, Barbara and husband Robert and Merrie Jane; and brother, James.
