Spunky was born on March 9, 1925 in Calvert, Texas to George Blackie and Mattie Burnitt Gibson. He passed away on Monday, July 25, 2005 in Conroe, Texas. Spunky attended Calvert schools and graduated from Bryan High School in 1942. He enrolled at Texas A & M University, but later that year he joined the U. S. Navy and served in World War II in the Aleutian Islands. Upon return, he continued his studies at Texas A & M University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1949. In 1946, he married Betty Stinson and together they had three children. He worked for Remington Rand in Houston, Texas and was active with the Conroe Volunteer Fire Department. Spunky later worked until his retirement as Director of Data Processing for the Texas Education Agency in Austin, Texas. After retirement, he relocated to Conroe to be near his children and grandchildren. Spunky enjoyed fishing, genealogy, travel and classical music.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, George Burnitt Gibson. He is survived by the mother of his children, Betty Stinson Gowing, and their three children and five grandsons: Seth Malone Gibson, Jr. and wife Betty of Conroe, and sons, Adam Burnitt of Houston and Martin Everitt of Conroe; Joe George Gibson and wife Judy of Conroe, and sons, Joe George Jr. of Portland, Oregon and Kenneth Minter of Conroe; and Leahnore Gibson Taylor and husband Joe, and son, Tyler Malone Lawson of Dobbin.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at The Palms of Conroe: Brent and Jennifer Wright and Alfonso Valdez, where Spunky resided for the last several years of his life.
There will be a private interment in Calvert. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 from 5:00 until 7:00 in the evening at the home of Seth and Betty Gibson, 1210 N. Thompson St., Conroe, Texas.
