James E. Price

James E. Price beloved husband, father, uncle and greatest of grandfathers passed away suddenly Saturday, March 4, 2006. This Texas original was born on January 18, 1922 on Price Hill in Montgomery Texas to Linda Paine Price and Morgan Grigsby Price. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Bessie Price Owen and brother Morgan L. Price.

James grew up during the hard years of the Depression as the favored ?baby? of a family farm community. He attended school in Montgomery and graduated with the Class of 1938. He began college at Sam Houston but his education was disrupted by the development of WWII. He enlisted in October of 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater as a Technical Sergeant with the 29th Bombardment Group. He was a military occupational specialty crew chief in the air offensive against Japan. His service decorations included the Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was discharged in January of 1946 and returned home to continue his education earning a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Houston in 1949. He is best remembered in the county for his years of work as a public surveyor. As a member of an old farming family, James represented the historic past while his work as a surveyor put him in the midst of the stream of newcomers. Many have benefited from his knowledge of the county?s physical geography and social history. James had a special gift for putting people at ease with his sense of humor, a gift which lives in each of us he touched. He was one of Montgomery?s most interesting gentlemen.

Though living in Houston after the war, his tie to Montgomery was strong. He married a Montgomery girl from another pioneer family. On April 4, 1947 he married Joyce Ann Martin and began a union of much love and laughter. Together he and Joyce made their home on the farm in Montgomery and reared three sons, all of whom live on the farm and continue to rear their families there. He leaves behind his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce; sons James M. (Jimmy) Price and wife Donna; Thomas S. (Tom) Price and wife Holly, David O. (Bo) Price and wife Janet. Nine grandchildren; Cole and wife Brandy; Kelly, Cade, Zak and wife Rebecca, Emily Weaks and husband Clay; Jacy; Weston, Dylan, and Ethan, numerous nephews, nieces, and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends at Cashner?s Funeral Home, Conroe, Texas from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday March 6. Funeral services will he held at Montgomery United Methodist Church Tuesday, March 7 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will follow at the New Cemetery, Montgomery, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made to the building fund of the Montgomery United Methodist Church at 22548 Hwy 105 W Montgomery, Texas 77356.
