James Leslie Browder, Papa, left this life just before midnight on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006 surrounded by his family. He was born on April 5, 1920 in Waverly, Texas where he lived most of his life. He was a very active member of the Waverly Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder.
James retired from Exxon after over 30 years of employment at their Baytown plant. After a few months of retirement, James left his recliner to help bring a community water system to Old Waverly and the surrounding area. He remained active with the One-Five-0 Water Supply Corporation for 27 years, retiring from their Board in 1999.
Another of James passions was his association with the Masons of Texas where he had been a Master Mason for over Fifty Years. James was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Waverly Cemetery Association and the Senior Citizens Center of San Jacinto County.
James was a World War II veteran proudly serving in the Navy. He was involved in several engagements in the Pacific Theatre and was awarded a Kamikaze Survivor Medal for his service as a Gunners Mate on the USS Watts.
While time robbed him of his strength, breath, and stride he remained active until the very end. Just days before his passing you could have found him inspecting improvements being made to segments of the One-Five-0 system. Working was something he enjoyed but visiting with friends and family was what he loved. When you visited James it didnt matter how long you had been there, at the mention of leaving Jamess response was always the same Whats your hurry?
James life centered around his family. James was the oldest child of Jim D. and Mildred Leslie Browder. He was raised and schooled in Coldspring. He met and married Mildred Louise Mullens, Nannie, in 1939. The two of them lived a wonderful life together and had two sons, Jimmy and Kenneth. Papas life was spent laughing, visiting, and eating with his family and friends. No matter what the setting was if you were with him he had a story or two to tell you.
James Leslie was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his son, Jimmy, and his brothers, Craig and Kenneth Fielding. He is survived by his son, Kenneth Browder and wife, Molly. Sister, Sally Atkins and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Bradley Browder and wife, Donna, Alyssa Walker and husband, David, Loreba Stoddard and husband, George, Kim Bartholet and husband, Bret, Kendra Browder, and James Browder. Papa had 10 great-grandchildren: Justin, Rebecca, Shelby, Courtney, Cole, Ben, Logan, Lauren, Bailee, and Hayden.
The funeral services will be held Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in the Waverly Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dan Alexander officiating. Interment will follow at the Old Waverly Cemetery.
