The Lord called Gary Lynn Goodlett home at the age of 59 on Sunday, July 2, 2006 after a short battle with aggressive stomach cancer. He passed peacefully at home with close friends and family in attendance. Gary was born June 2, 1947 in San Angelo, Texas to Joseph Oliver and Velma Mildred (Williams) Goodlett.
Gary and his family settled in Conroe permanently in 1960. He graduated from Conroe High School in 1966 where he was a member of the football and track team and has been a LIFETIME TIGER ever since. He attended Sam Houston State University for three years before choosing the Houston Fire Department as his career. He was in the first graduating class for paramedics in HFD and served in that capacity for thirteen years. After leaving that branch, he became an engineer operator. His last station assignment was at Station 31 on the B shift before his retirement in 2004. He took the greatest pride in belonging to the brotherhood of firefighters and leaves behind many brothers who grieve the passing of their friend, but continue to contribute to acts of heroism day in and day out.
Another passion was his zest for NASCAR and following the racing of his brother-in-law and nephew, Greg and Chris Davidson. Gary was a lifetime member of the Montgomery County Fair Association and always looked forward to the camaraderie and antics of the kitchen crew. Gary and long time friend, Rick Booth, formed Goodlett and Booth Builders in the 1980s. Since retirement, Gary and his wife, Sharon, have involved themselves with antiques and collectables, have traveled in their motorhome and belonged to the DeMontrond Travelers Club. Gary never met a stranger and made many friends across Texas and around the country. His wonderful and sometimes wicked humor and his ability to talk will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Joe Goodlett. Surviving to cherish his memory and follow in his footsteps is his mother, Velma, who currently lives at Park Manor in Conroe; wife, Sharon, of thirty-six years; sons, Ryan and his wife, Lisa, and Brandon. Also surviving is his sister, Debbie Goodlett-Machala of Conroe; nephews, Wayne Machala and wife Melissa; great-nephew, Cody of Montgomery, and Andrew Machala and wife Denise of San Antonio, Texas. Included are his brother-in-law, Greg Davidson and his wife, Peggy, of Friendswood, Texas; nephew, Chris Davidson, and wife Rhonda of Pearland, Texas; great nephew, Derrick; great nieces, Haley and McKenzie along with niece, Heather (Davidson) Burris, husband, Ralph, and great nephew, Blake. Relatives that survive are Charlie and Virgie Goodlett, Eunice and Wanda Goodlett from Colorado City, Texas along with other friends and family.
The Goodlett family would like to extend their gratitude to all of the friends that have shown their outpouring of love through cards, visitations, and phone call. Special thanks go to Dr. Jason Laningham for his care and compassion.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 4, 2006 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Cashner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gary Goodlett Memorial Scholarship Fund at First Bank of Conroe.
